USDA Plans to Enroll 4 Million Acres in CRP

Washington--USDA plans to have landowners enroll 4 million acres in the Conservation Reserve Program in the fall. Speaking Friday in Omaha, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the next general signup for CRP will begin March 14 and continue through April 15.

Vilsack signaled that allowing farmers to grow biofuel crops such as switchgrass on CRP land might improve habitat for wildlife while making the CRP more economical. “We’re looking at whether it makes sense to use CRP land for biofuel,” he said. But Vilsack did not specify what that would mean for the program."
